The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is set to introduce a new freelance work permit that caters to individuals of all skill levels. The permit, according to a top government official, is expected to be launched in the third quarter of 2023. The flexible work permit will enable freelancers to work within the UAE or from any location worldwide.
Abdulrahman Al Awar, the Minister of Human Resources and Emiratisation, revealed the introduction of the new permit during the ‘Remote’ forum held in Dubai. Al Awar explained that the permit allows low-skilled individuals to work for themselves and with others, as long as they comply with the law and register with the ministry. He also stated that the permit is not restricted to highly-skilled individuals, and it would provide an opportunity for all skill levels.
The minister went on to emphasize that the UAE is developing new policies to support all forms of flexible and remote work. The country announced several visas and residency permits in April 2022, which is expected to benefit the economy and attract skilled workers from around the world.
With the new flexible work permits, workers will no longer be tied to a specific employer. The policy allows individuals to work for themselves and choose the kind of work they wish to take up. The setup benefits both the employees and the employers. Employers will have more flexibility and will not have to take risks, while employees will not be restricted to one organization, thereby enhancing productivity in the labor market.
The introduction of this new work permit shows that the UAE is committed to providing an enabling environment for freelancers, especially in a rapidly changing work landscape. By allowing individuals of all skill levels to take up freelance jobs, the country is positioning itself as a destination for top talent.
